Christmas market in Berchtesgaden and Salzburg

Travelling to the best Christmas markets during Advent with Peter

The Berchtesgadener Land and the province of Salzburg are known around the world for their romantic and atmospheric Christmas markets. Advent in the mountains is a time full of secrets, ancient customs and culinary delights. Once a thick, white layer of snow has spread across the country, the Christmas feeling is here. Host Peter Juhre has thought of something special for your Advent holiday in Berchtesgaden: take the Alpenglühn shuttle bus up to four times a week to the best Christmas markets in Bavaria and Salzburg!

Christmas market hopping with Peter Juhre

Travelling with private chauffeur and Christmas market insider Peter, you discover several traditional Christmas markets around Berchtesgaden on one afternoon. There are also a few smaller and quieter markets aside from the larger and more popular ones that Peter loves to drive to. The selections includes the Christmas markets in Berchtesgaden and Reichenhall plus the lovely markets at Lake Wolfgang, in Hellbrunn’s castle courtyard, Gutshof Glanegg, Waldbad Anif, Salzburg’s historic city centre and on Hohenwerfen Castle in the neighbouring province of Salzburg.

The smaller Christmas markets in particular offer products by local artists and craftsmen. Wood carvings, ceramics, artfully designed Christmas tree decorations, self-knitted stuff made from sheep wool, and marmalades are among the presents you should take home. Christmas carols by brass musicians and vocal groups, warm candlelight and spicy mulled wine help to create the right Advent market atmosphere. Peter ensures a safe journey home and sadly has to miss out on his mulled wine!

Advent customs in Berchtesgaden

St Nicholas and Krampus don’t just belong to every Christmas market but also to the lively Advent customs at the Ferienparadies Alpenglühn. The benevolent bishop and his companion from hell visit the guests on December 6th. Krampus runs and the Buttnmandl run, which are characteristic for Berchtesgaden, are fixtures of pre-Christmas traditions. Dating even further back than the Krampus in the Berchtesgadener Land and the province of Salzburg is the “Percht”, who appears as “schiach” (terrifying) and “schön” (beautiful) figure in groups. The “wild chase” around the Untersberg is equally unique.

The Berchtesgaden holiday region usually already becomes a snow-covered hiking and skiing paradise during Advent. Go on torchlight and snowshoe hikes on old smuggler routes around the Ferienparadies Alpenglühn and in Werfenweng with Peter Juhre. Fondue, raclette and hot stone delights in the rustic Alpenglühn snuggery taste at least twice as nice afterwards.
